The exterior of the tiny Persephone Books shop in London is painted the same shade of cool, English “grey” as the covers of the titles sold inside.
The circa-1700 building is a fitting spot to house the 115 titles Persephone publishes, rediscovered gems from the mid-20th century. Each is highly giftable, with endpapers replicated from fabric designed the same year the book was originally published. While owner Nicola Beauman runs Persephone Books in the U.K., her daughter, Francesca, an author and former BBC television presenter, is spreading the word from her L.A. base as the U.S. manager. Two of Francesca’s favorite tomes include The Blank Wall (Persephone, $20), a gripping thriller by Elisabeth Sanxay Holding, and The Home-Maker (Persephone, $20) by Dorothy Canfield Fisher. persephonebooks.co.uk.
