San Clemente-based model Hanalei Reponty was destined for a career involving the sea—she learned to swim in her native Tahiti before she could even walk.
Her new surf and swimwear line, Abysse—“It’s a French term we use for the ocean, it is a magical place,” says Reponty—features sexy, sporty wetsuits, vests and bikinis in Tahitian-inspired prints. Her debut California-made collection has a “Bond girl-meets-’80s New Wave” aesthetic with six different styles she has tested herself while surfing the California coast. And along with supporting oceanic environmental charity Sirens for the Sea, Abysse uses only Japanese geoprene, the most eco-friendly alternative to neoprene, made of limestone polymers.
