“The idea to open a nontoxic nail salon came about when our co-founder, Tran Wills, was pregnant and
couldn’t find a place to get her nails done that didn’t make her sick from all the intense smells and harsh chemicals,” explains Base Coat’s Ali Elman, part of the founding trio, along with Sarah Simon, who opened the brand’s first outpost in Denver in 2013. Now the salon has brought that same wellness-driven philosophy to L.A. with the opening of a spacious flagship in Downtown L.A.’s Arts District. A treatment menu based on the brand’s namesake line of vegan, chemical- and cruelty-free polishes in 100 colors stays true to a commitment to health and relaxation, as does an in-house bar that turns out fresh juices, mocktails, teas and tonics.
