Shore Thing

Perched over the Pacific, Heather Perrilliat and Jared Freedman join together in modern whimsy.

A family dinner at Nobu Malibu quickly turned into a wedding planning session for Heather Perrilliat and Jared Freedman. “We both love sushi and the space is so beautiful and inviting,” explains Heather, a professional interior organizer from Oakland. “It sits on the ocean and was the perfect place for us.”

Five years after meeting at a party at Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel, Jared, a brand director with Citizens of Humanity jeans, popped the question during a relaxing day at home in Santa Monica. “I told him that my client had asked me, ‘If your boyfriend asked you to marry him right now, would you say yes?’ ” Heather explains. “He said, ‘Well, would you?’ and then he leaned over and reached into a hiding place and handed me a ring.”

Heather put a festive spin on the zen space—incorporating origami-inspired piñatas and tasseled branches by New York-based Confetti System, simple succulents and greenery in geometric vessels and even a Lladró Hello Kitty figure atop the metallic cake from Culver City’s Jin Patisserie. Heather surprised her groom with a graffiti wall made by one of his best friends for a photo backdrop that doubled as a privacy wall in the parking lot. After exchanging vows on the restaurant’s outdoor deck overlooking the ocean, the couple headed inside for sushi and dancing, later revealing to their 175 guests they had a little girl on the way (Golden, was born six months later on March 14). Heather’s friend Chip Brown—better known as Big Man Bakes from Downtown L.A.—whipped up individually boxed chocolate, red velvet and carrot cupcakes for guests to enjoy on their way home.

While the couple’s honeymoon excursion to Europe was postponed due to morning sickness, Heather says the pregnancy made the big day even more special. “It all happens and goes by so fast, but it was amazing…so many people told us it was the most fun they ever had at a wedding.”
