If chef Jason Fox’s Mission District staple, Commonwealth, is the diner’s equivalent of the little black dress—
all understated refinement any night of the week—his latest Mint Plaza exploit, Oro, is the crisp, white oxford shirt alternative. It’s classic, masculine and a little more casual. At the bar, sips of The Portola cocktail’s pineapple-tinged mezcal are a palatable precursor to heady fare like chicken-liver mousse with fig-tea jam and pork sausage nestled in shelling bean salad. It’s all set against a bi-level backdrop, marked by a transparent staircase and accents like an octopus shaped punch container. Feeling adventurous? Order the $75 per person “blind tasting menu,” and let Fox send you whatever dishes he fancies. 8 Mint Plaza, S.F., 415-974-1212; orosf.com. • CAROLYN ALBURGER.
