“The notion of freedom is as American as apple pie and blue jeans. Whether it be Rosie the Riveter advocating women working during wartime, or hippies in painted and patched bell-bottoms, denim is the fabric of independence and self-expression.” —A Denim Story ($32.50, Rizzoli)

From three L.A. experts, A Denim Story chronicles the wardrobe staple in all its many forms.

After seven years of conversing daily about jeans while building their line, Emily Current and Meritt Elliott, with their frequent collaborator, fashion photographer Hilary Walsh, have assembled a complete tribute: A Denim Story ($33, Rizzoli). In bell-bottoms and cutoffs, modern muses like L.A.’s Angela Lindvall are represented alongside icons Jane Birkin and Marilyn Monroe. As for the future of blues: “Everyone’s been talking about the end of color and print and the resurgence of classic black and white denim—getting back to basics,” says Current. Walsh, though, doesn’t anticipate a seismic shift away from skinnies and boyfriends anytime soon. rizzoliusa.com.
