Maggie Rizer’s new boutique in San Ramon reflects her favorites in both fashion and design
Like many teenage girls, Maggie Rizer was obsessed with clothes. Unlike most teenage girls, Rizer grew up to be a supermodel. “I was in the middle of the fashion world,” says the willowy blonde, who hit her stride in the late ’90s/early aughts with campaigns for Versace, Louis Vuitton and Prada. “I was really lucky,” she says.
Today Rizer resides in East Bay, far from the klieg lights of the runway, with her husband, businessman Alex Mehran, and their four young children. Yet her love of fashion remains unabated. “[It’s] deeper now that I’ve earned an understanding of it,” she says. So when the opportunity arose for her to open her own store with partner MarisCollective in the new Renzo Piano-designed shopping hot spot City Center Bishop Ranch in San Ramon, she didn’t hesitate. “I always had a boutique in the back of my mind,” she says. Hence, M by Maggie Rizer was born.
Rizer took a personal approach to the project, hand-selecting the jewel box decor — with its fuchsia Matthew Williamson wallpaper and vintage bird cage — as well as the designers: “[They] don’t have much in common except that I love them all. Some I have known since the beginning of my career [Dean Harris, Anna Sui] and some I have newly fallen in love with [Kim Mee Hye, Zimmermann].” There’s also a kid’s section with toys by Moulin Roty and Stella McCartney fashion. “The M woman is every woman,” Rizer explains. “She’s a mom, a grandmother, a high school student. She likes to be fashionable in a realistically wearable way that’s true to her, not to the rules of the newest blogger.” City Center Bishop Ranch, 6000 Bollinger Canyon Rd., San Ramon, 925-398-3020; mbymaggie.com.
