An Exhibition Dedicated to the Original Naturalist-Activist |
Dr. Jane Goodall — or Dame Jane Morris Goodall, a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire; or formerly Baroness Jane van Lawick-Goodall, a title from her first marriage — is widely considered the world’s leading expert on chimpanzees, thanks to her 60-year study of wild chimps, which began in Gombe Stream National park in Tanzania. In “Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall,” opening this month at L.A. County’s Natural History Museum, visitors can “accompany” the famous scientist, who is now 87, deep in the jungle. With a life-size replica of Goodall’s research tent, videos of digitally rendered chimpanzees, and a lifelike hologram of Goodall sharing her memories and lessons learned, the exhibit is poised to inspire legions of future scientists and satiate adventure-seekers, activists and animal-lovers alike. Sotheby’s Sets Up Shop in Beverly Hills |
Sotheby’s auction house — which has had a long-term presence in Beverly Hills representing famous estates and important blue-chip art collections — is putting down roots with a new streamlined location. Following similar retail concepts which bowed in Palm Beach and East Hampton earlier in the year, the sprawling gallery-like exhibition space features rotating presentations of high jewelry and watches, fine art, and furnishings before they go up for auction, along with pieces that are available for immediate purchase. The 4,300-square-foot prewar building, designed by influential Southern California architects Douglas Honnold and George Vernon Russell, allows for flexible programming, including this month’s immersive installation by artist Fabrizio Moretti, who is also the drummer for The Strokes (on view from late November through mid-December). 350 N. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s New Makeup Line |
L.A.-based supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who is currently expecting her second child with actor husband Jason Statham, seemed destined to create her own beauty line. In 2016, she started a beauty-centric website spilling the beans on her own makeup routines and those of her celebrity pals and industry insiders. Collaborations over the years with brands including Nanor and La Bouche Rouge, and her invaluable experience in the makeup chair (she’s most famously fronted campaigns for Burberry and Victoria’s Secret), have all led to her new product line, Rose Inc. The vegan, cruelty-free collection includes everything you need to get you through the day, from brightening serums and clarifying toners to hydrating, dewy concealers and matte lip and cheek colors, all in minimalist refillable packaging made of glass and sugarcane-based plastics. If you weren’t blessed with Huntington-Whiteley’s pillowy soft lips, her sculpting lip crayon — designed to fill lips with plumping moisture — may be the next best thing. roseinc.com. |

A Chic Cabin on the Lake |
Grant Leavitt and Jacey Duprie of Damsel in Dior fell in love with Lake Arrowhead’s crystal-clear private lake (accessible only to homeowners), mountain air and all-around Americana during COVID — so much so that they decided to invest in a cabin of their own. This season, they open the doors to The Hideaway, a white, shingled cottage conceived by L.A. designer Martha Mulholland (savvy design followers will remember her work on The Line) and Duprie that sleeps 12 people. There’s also a hot tub, a “bunk room,” cozy fireplaces, a strawberry patch in the front yard, and a pathway to the lake — all just an hour and a half from L.A. hideawaylakea.com. |

A Fine Reason To Head to Healdsburg |
Baron Ziegler and winemaker Rob Fischer’s Sonoma-focused boutique outfit Marine Layer was named for the dense fog that blankets the area, contributing to its harsh — yet rewarding — growing conditions. The winery proudly sources grapes from some of Sonoma’s best: Charles Heintz’s prized Chardonnay sites just outside of Occidental, Gap’s Crown, Jentoft vineyards planted by the Dutton family, Gravenstein (a former apple orchard) and Marine Layer’s own 6-acre plot on a southwest-facing slope in the Sebastopol Hills, with sandy Goldridge soil. Now Marine Layer can show off its artisanal approach with a chic tasting room in downtown Healdsburg (a town which is certainly having its moment, thanks to the openings of Montage, Region at The Barlow, and Quail & Condor, along with upgrades to mainstays like the Farmhouse Inn and The Madrona). Designed by Hommeboys, the Marine Layer space features ceramic Oaxacan pendant lights, Moroccan wool rugs and a modern glass fireplace. They partnered with Little Saint, the neighborhood’s forthcoming culinary center from Kyle and Katina Connaughton of SingleThread, on a seasonal, plant-based menu of small bites including a farm-fresh mezze plate that pairs perfectly with an impressive lineup of single-vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. 308 B Center St., Healdsburg, 707-395-0830; marinelayerwines.com. |
