Peruse Some Rarely Seen Picasso Works on Paper |
Pablo Picasso first started making paper cutouts when he was just a boy but continued the practice well into his eighties. These papiers découpés were independent works of art or created in relation to works in other mediums, both as models for his fabricators and as gifts or games for family and friends. This month the Hammer Museum opens “Picasso Cut Papers,” unveiling this little known yet foundational part of his private studio practice. Since Picasso rarely sold or showcased his cut papers, the exhibit will be a first-time for even the most devout Picasso aficionado. Through December 31. 10899 Wilshire Blvd., L.A., 310-443-7000; hammer.ucla.edu.

L.A.’s Hip Sycamore District Welcomes a Sleek New Showroom |
For designer and gallerist Holly Hunt’s new space in the increasingly hip Sycamore District, local architects Johnston Marklee took a bit of a Russian doll approach. Within the lofty industrial 1940s building, they designed a house within a house, comprising two freestanding villas. The result is an elegant juxtaposition of raw industrial materials and refined pieces from colorful Vladimir Kagan Serpentine sofas and sculpted tables to furnishings from represented designers including Christian Astuguevieille, Moss & Lam and Jean-Michel Frank. Since opening her first showroom over 40 years ago, Holly Hunt has reinvented traditional showrooms with design-forward galleries across the country, but this might take the cake. 941 N. Following a global tour this fall, Christie’s auction house is ready to present the esteemed collection of Ann and Gordon Getty, featuring over 1,500 pieces from the couple’s storied San Francisco manse. Ann, a celebrated interior designer who passed away in 2020, filled the home with masterpieces of English and European furniture, Asian artworks, European ceramics, Chinese export porcelain, European and Asian textiles, Impressionist and Old Master paintings and no shortage of Tiffany & Co. homewares. The collection showcases the couple’s varied interests (Gordon, the son of J. Paul Getty, is a classical music composer). Former visitors of the home might recognize some pieces like the vibrant floral still life by Henri Matisse, Bouquet, vase chinois, 1902, or the crown jewel of the collection, a Venetian painting by 18th-century master Canaletto (estimated to fetch at least $6 million). In addition, Ann amassed quite a collection of handbags from the finest European houses including Hermès, Dior and Chanel. Don’t be shy—the proceeds of the sale will go to the couple’s charitable foundation. Online October 10-25; christies.com. |

Dine in an Intimate Eatery Stocked by the Big Sur Coastline
Chef Jonny Black has put in time in the high-pressure kitchens of Per Se, Atelier Crenn and Quince, among others. Today, he and his wife, Monique, call Carmel-by-the-Sea home, and it’s there that they are debuting Chez Noir, their dream of an intimate, hyper-local, seasonal restaurant. “The food is inspired by the Big Sur coastline, the coasts of Brittany and the Spanish Basque Country with a little of Paris and New York mixed in,” explains Black. The kitchen does almost everything in-house, including charcuterie, pasta and baking—even making vermouth and caviar cured in salt from Big Sur. Independent fishermen up and down the coast supply line-caught fish, Monterey abalone and local shellfish. “Carmel is such a dreamy place to cook,” says Monique. Chez Noir serves a classic Tortilla Española topped with sea urchin and lime crema, and Garganelli pasta with ridgeback prawns and sweet corn. Larger plates include Txuleta (Basque-style grilled beef with peppers, onions and potato) and Whole Grilled Trout with gem lettuce and roe sauce. Yet, with seasonality and local seafood at the forefront, the menu will always change. 5th Ave. between Dolores and San Carlos St., Carmel-by-the-Sea; cheznoircarmel.com.
