An Oasis of Wellness and Wonder Opens in the Mojave Desert
Set on 230 secluded acres along the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains, a tranquil desert oasis promises a transformative experience on multiple levels. Sensei Porcupine Creek, limited to 22 luxe accommodations, recently debuted as the second outpost of the science-backed wellness and hospitality company founded by tech magnate Larry Ellison and lauded physician Dr. David Agus. (The first location, Hawaii’s Sensei Lānaʻi, a Four Seasons Resort, opened in 2019.) The resort in Rancho Mirage hosts customized well-being, tennis and golf retreats which require a minimum five-night stay, incorporating innovative technology (like WHOOP 4.0 wearable devices) and one-on-one counsel from nutritionists, sports experts and other wellness practitioners. Every program highlights three simple principles: move, nourish and rest. After moving through activities for honing physical wellness, it’s time for nourishment at chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s guests-only restaurant, and later restful signature spa offerings like the 90-minute Abhyanga four-handed massage. Whichever journey you choose, it’s bound to be metamorphic. From $1,225/night. 42765 Dunes View Rd., Rancho Mirage, 760-477-4767; sensei.com A.J.B.

Troubadour Bakes Daily Bread (and More) for Healdsburg’s Foodies |
Just a year after the opening of their bustling Healdsburg bakery, Quail & Condor, husband-and-wife team Sean McGaughey and Melissa Yanc, who both cut their teeth at the Michelin-starred SingleThread Farms, reveal their latest concept: Troubadour Bread & Bistro. Set to be a hotspot for NorCal gourmands, the sandwich shop and boulangerie by day transforms into an intimate 20-seat bistro by night offering a French-inspired five-course prix fixe menu celebrating the bounty of Sonoma County. Dishes for le dîner including matsutake mushroom toast on Danish rye, truffled croque monsieur and a coq au vin with pommes Lyonnaise take the idea of breaking bread to a whole new level. 381 Healdsburg Ave., Healdsburg, 707-756-3972; troubadourhbg.com. |

A Street Artist Par Excellence Finds a New Home |
Thierry Guetta, aka Mr. Brainwash, is a French-born, Los Angeles-based street artist known for defying boundaries. He rose to fame in 2010 with his collaboration with Banksy in the Academy Award-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, which tells the story of Guetta’s underground art escapades in L.A. Now, Guetta, who has designed album covers for Madonna, Michael Jackson and Rick Ross, can add another feather to his cap as the creator of his very own contemporary art museum. Taking over the iconic Richard Meier-designed former home of the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, the newly opened Mr. Brainwash Art Museum will feature an evolving collection of the artist’s irreverent paintings and sculptures, immersive installations and a 150-seat original movie theater. And yes, visitors can exit through the gift shop. 465 N. Beverly Dr., Beverly Hills; mrbrainwashartmuseum.com.

New Brand Wyeth Takes California Style to New Heights |
Eschewing the wait and see approach, Jacey Duprie, the L.A.-based influencer behind Damsel in Dior, doubled down by simultaneously launching a new fashion line, Wyeth, and a brick-and-mortar store to boot. Duprie called upon interior designer Martha Mulholland to reimagine the space at Culver City’s bustling Platform shopping center (Mullholand previously designed Duprie’s Lake Arrowhead home along with the now shuttered The Apartment by The Line on Melrose Place). The result is an ode to California design taking cues from classic Spanish-style estates in Montecito to Chateau Marmont to San Ysidro Ranch. Reclaimed brick flooring, hand-carved millwork, a fireplace, and a custom chandelier fabricated from native plants and flowers set the stage for Wyeth’s in-house collection of California classics and collaborations with like-minded brands including Jennifer Behr, Lake, Kule and Rhode. With many pieces named after California locales (think the cashmere Presidio dress, the Santa Ynez barn dress, the Runyon zip-up or the Brentwood cardigan), a de facto Golden State uniform is beginning to take shape. 8830 Washington Blvd., Ste. 102, Culver City, 424-955-6212; shopwyeth.com.

After 18 Years, This NorCal Design Store Makes Its SoCal Debut |
In French, the phrase coup d’etat connotes a sudden, violent overthrow of an existing government by a small group. A rebellious upheaval, if you will. In San Francisco, Darin Geise borrowed the phrase for his contemporary design shop around the corner from the San Francisco Design Center. Now, nearly 18 years after opening in S.F., Geise’s rebellion heads south with Coup D’Etat’s debut Los Angeles location. “We are turning up the volume at this new location,” says Geise. “There is a playfulness and risk-taking design aesthetic in L.A. that we are excited to entertain.” On offer will be pieces from California-based artists and designers including Chuck Moffit, Jocelyn Marsh, Edwin Maldonado, Damian Jones and Linda Fahey along with curated contemporary art, furniture, lighting and select vintage pieces. Let the battle begin! 100 N. Robertson Blvd., L.A., 323-825-5880; coupdetatsf.com.
