Chopard hosted an intimate dinner to launch its first high jewelry collaboration with Julia Roberts in the week leading up to the Oscars, gathering friends at Chateau Marmont on Friday, March 8. A trove of guests were on hand for the unveiling held in the candlelit courtyard, including Elton John and David Furnish. Chopard’s co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele worked with the actress on the three-piece capsule, Chopard x Julia Roberts, a tribute to the house’s Insofu emerald. The 6,225-carat stone was found in Zambia and named after the regional word for elephant. The debuting pieces were the first designs from the stone, which was purchased in its rough form and has since been cut into gems. The brand has previously collaborated with creatives including Rihanna, Julianne Moore, and Marion Cotillard on various projects, but this was the first partnership with Roberts, its current global ambassador.
The creative dialogue between between Roberts and Scheufele included inspiration from traditional Indian jewelry. The resulting ring, necklace, and pair of earrings combine emeralds cut from the original Insofu — making them traceable from the mine to the finished jewelry — with ruby red rubellites and matte blue turquoise, a type of stone Roberts has cherished and worn throughout her life. Each piece was made with Fairmined-certified ethical rose gold, part of the house’s mission, and also a must for Roberts.
Amid sprawling florals arranged throughout the patio setting, Jason Pelsey’s jazz trio played. Roberts paired the cocktail ring, resembling a large flower complete with elaborate petals, with the necklace hung with cascading tassels of colorful gems and earrings designed in a similar manner. A fashion show included a preview of Scheufele’s latest high jewelry designs paired with Caroline’s Couture, custom-tailored garments also designed by the Chopard creative to pair with the baubles. DJ Michelangelo worked the turntables well into the evening as guests got a look at all the sparklers.
