The museum, and longtime partner Gucci, hosted the 11th annual gathering honoring artist Helen Pashgian and filmmaker Park Chan-wook

Projections of Helen Pashgian’s optical sculptures and an array of brightly printed dresses and patterned suits merged into a visual feast at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Art + Film Gala held on Saturday, November 5, beneath construction cranes at work on the institution’s new building. A parade of Gucci designs—the brainchild of creative director Alessandro Michele—joined a host of chromatically hued looks under Chris Burden’s sculptural Urban Light installation, all of which turned kaleidoscopic inside the pavilion beside Michael Heizer’s Levitated Mass at the 11th edition of the party hosted by longtime co-chairs Eva Chow and Leonardo DiCaprio.
On the purple carpet, LACMA director Michael Govan welcomed the evening’s honorees, Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook and the Pasadena-born Light and Space artist Pashgian, as well as Idris Elba, Mark Bradford, Catherine Opie, Lauren Halsey, Betye Saar, Martine Syms, Jonas Wood and architect Peter Zumthor, who could view the progress of his new design for the museum taking shape on-site.

Also on hand to honor Chan-wook’s spellbinding visual films and Pashgian’s pioneering color-saturated columns, discs and spheres were Salma Hayek Pinault, Jodie Turner-Smith, Carey Mulligan, Mariacarla Boscono, Andrew Garfield, Billie Eilish (in a GG Supreme silk twill pajama set, no less), Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Simu Liu, Elaine Wynn, Park Hae-il, Quinta Brunson, Henry Golding, Adrien Brody, Sean Penn, Olivia Wilde, Julia Garner, Chloe Zhao, Jude Law, Jared Leto and the Roman band Måneskin. Guests gathered in the tented pavilion for a celebratory dinner prepared by chef Mattia Agazzi of Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura, in Beverly Hills, in collaboration with L.A.-based chef Joachim Splichal. Next, Elton John took to his red lacquered piano for “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocket Man,” “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me,” dedicated to actor Taron Egerton, on hand for the party, and a rousing rendition of “I’m Still Standing.”

The event, supporting LACMA’s film initiatives—including documentaries and commissioned works from emerging and mid-career filmmakers—and ongoing projects, raised $5.1 million in the shadow of its partially completed Zumthor-designed new digs. For the 88-year-old Pashgian, the night was also a preview of sorts. She’s at work on a new piece, sure to expand our collective perceptions of color yet again, that’ll be on view next year at the museum.
