The California EV brand that made its mark with the elegant Air sedan has entered a bold new chapter with its first SUV, the Lucid Gravity. With space for up to seven passengers and class-leading cargo room, the three-row Gravity is poised to take on the likes of the Rivian R1S, Mercedes EQS SUV, and BMW X7.

In the rugged foothills above the lavender farms and vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley, we put the line-topping Grand Touring model (from $94,900) through its paces, propelled by Lucid’s proprietary dual-motor powertrain that makes 828 hp and 909 lb-ft of torque. Built on a bespoke EV platform, Gravity can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, enough to effortlessly whisk us onto Highway 101 and reach felonious speeds in the blink of an eye.

Gravity shares the same design DNA as the Air — long, low proportions; a taut, sculpted silhouette; sleek A-pillars; and an updated take on Lucid’s signature light blade with a crisp metal edge. It’s slightly bolder than its sedan companion, but designers prioritized aerodynamics over a more upright, aggressive look, a strategy that yields a drag coefficient of just 0.24 Cd, which enables its speed and helps it achieve more than 440 miles of range.

On canyon roads, Gravity felt confident and composed, while a short off-road hill climb hinted at real weekend versatility. The real fun, however, came on a makeshift dirt track, where the car’s rear-biased power delivery and balanced chassis had us grinning through controlled slides, proving Gravity to be more agile than its footprint suggests.

In the cabin, Gravity boasts a reconfigured instrument panel for better visibility, with a single 34-inch curved OLED display floating above a new landscape-oriented center screen. A low-profile, squared-off steering wheel eliminates blind spots on the driver’s display. Designers chose warm, tactile materials like matte-finished wood, alpaca-blend wool, and textile mesh, with elevated touches such as the etched glass center console cover. Color themes are inspired by and named after iconic California locations, including Santa Monica, Mojave, and Tahoe.

Upgraded charging technology enables Gravity to charge up to 400 kW on 1000V charging equipment and up to 225 kW on 500V architecture fast chargers. A standard NACS port makes it compatible with the Tesla Supercharger network — an upgrade from the CCS port used on the current Air. Customer deliveries of the Gravity Grand Touring models have already begun, with a lower-powered Touring model (from $79,900) expected later this year. lucidmotors.com.
