Brake lights along the Pacific Coast Highway heralded the opening of Frieze Los Angeles—and the week of special exhibitions and parties accompanying its arrival—as artists, collectors, curators, and luminaries gathered at the Getty Villa Museum in Malibu on Monday, February 13. The re-created Roman country house turned museum—in collaboration with Frieze and the Loewe Foundation, the Spanish clothing and leather house’s private cultural organization—hosted a celebratory evening ahead of the international art fair’s Santa Monica airport launch.

Getty President and CEO Katherine Fleming welcomed guests gathered in the museum’s courtyard and inner peristyle, including Frieze’s Simon Fox, the Getty’s Timothy Potts, MOCA’s Johanna Burton, and Art Production Fund’s Casey Fremont, plus Alexandra Grant, Angela Davis, Kulapat Yantrasast, Doug Aitken, Diedrick Brackens, Rafa Esparza, Nikolai Haas, Chase Hall, Lauren Halsey, Calida Rawles, Alison Saar, Betye Saar, Lorna Simpson, Tavares Strachan, Leilah Weinraub, Jwan Yosef and Ricky Martin, Megan and Peter Chernin, Maria Hummer-Tuttle and Robert Tuttle, Mary Klaus Martin, Dallas Price-Van Breda, and Getty curator Jeffrey Spier. Also on hand were Balthazar and Rosetta Getty and HRH Princess Eugenie, Yvonne Force Villareal, Elaine and Gillian Wynn, Chance the Rapper, Owen Wilson, Jeffrey Soros, Michael S. Smith, and Ambassador James Costos.

Frieze Americans Director Christine Messineo gave a toast highlighting the collective project of arts institutions, organizations, and galleries alike, saying, “We all share the mission to provide a platform for art and culture.” Before they headed upstairs to look at the Getty Villa’s exhibition, Nubia: Jewels of Ancient Sudan, Fleming invited international guests and locals to reconvene for the upcoming iteration of Pacific Standard Time, the region-wide exploration of art and science through exhibitions and public programs that is slated for next year. But first: a week of gallery visits and days spent discovering works inside the fair itself, a look at emerging artists in its Focus section, and favored 20th-century pieces at Barker Hanger and visits to Jay Ezra Nayssan’s Against the Edge curation of adjacent exhibitions at cultural sites located on the Westside.
