Runway Report: Total Whiteout

Love an achromatic look? The catwalk is an infinite gallery of modern choices

Words by ALISON EDMOND

Whether you prefer a crisp, bright white for the chic factor it instantly adds to your everyday uniform, or are a bride in search of a contemporary style that breaks away from the classic gown, let’s not forget the runway as a vital resource for a look in white that’s all your own.

A Menswear Look is a Classic Power Move
Don’t be fooled into thinking a man’s suit is not feminine — even on your wedding day. Sometimes a beautifully cut jacket with matching pants and a chic cummerbund can look as gorgeously femme as any full-skirted and frilled extravaganza. For setting a decades-long trend, look to Bianca Jagger (considered one of the sexiest brides ever, by the way). If you need a girly touch, perhaps an organza blouse or a satin shirt will do the trick. Designers like Dolce & Gabbana, Haider Ackermann and Saint Laurent all offer the sharpest of cuts.

Live Out Your Fantasies on Your Big Day (or Any Day)
For those who are not shy and make to make the most of a moment (kudos to you), this is where fashion really kicks in and you can push all the boundaries. Make an entrance no one in the room will soon forget — whether it’s a fountain of feathers, layers of tulle or embroidery to the hilt, this is a great time to play dress-up. Vivienne Westwood is the queen of drama, and Rodarte, Chanel or Valentino will never disappoint.

The Minimalist Touch Never Gets Old
It’s seldom a mistake to go with a clean and pure line, avoiding all the fuss and frill if that’s not who you are. Photos last for years, after all, and the minimal approach never dates. Caroline Bessette Kennedy is the perfect icon here, and who doesn’t look at her silk Narciso Rodriguez gown and think it’s just as modern as the day it was made? For a 2019 update, look to Tom Ford, Jil Sander, Brandon Maxwell, Oscar de la Renta or Rodriguez himself.
