More than 300 of California’s cultural cognoscenti gathered at the Getty Center on Monday, Sept. 16, to acknowledge the achievements of artists Ed Ruscha and Lorna Simpson and historian Mary Beard, to whom were presented the J. Paul Getty Medal. Guests included Klaus Biesenbach, Bettina Korek, Tamara Mellon and Betye Saar, who convened for a dinner celebrating the incredible careers of the three individuals, now among only 14 persons to have been awarded the distinction since it was established by the J. Paul Getty Trust in 2013. Given annually, the medal recognizes extraordinary contributions in the fields of museology, art historical research, conservation science and philanthropy.

Former British Museum director Neil MacGregor introduced the Getty medalists — to applause from attendees such as Zoë and Olivier de Givenchy, Balthazar and Rosetta Getty, and Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef. Mayor Eric Garcetti also gave remarks.
