On Friday, Nov. 8, the members of the local art community gathered at LAXART in Hollywood to celebrate the nonprofit’s 2019 benefit, which encompassed a silent/online auction — with works donated by Todd Grey, Anna Sew Hoy, Rashid Johnson and more artists — as well as an evening of discussion and entertainment.
Guests, including Andrea Bowers, Alex Israel, Kim Gordon and Brian Butler, enjoyed a conversation between director Hamza Walker and artist Phil Peters about Peters’ exhibition “Outside/In” — on display at LAXART — which features audio recordings from West Texas fracking sites and hanging quilted fabrics by Karen Reimer.
Others who came out to support the artist’s platform included Barbara Kruger, Henry Taylor, Kathryn Andrews, Francois Ghebaly and Sayre Gomez, as well as LAXART’s deputy director Catherine Taft and director of development Laura Creed.
The program continued just a short walk away at Jeffrey Deitch’s gallery, where everyone savored a dinner catered by local favorite Jon and Vinny’s while singer Zsela performed expressive ballads. Afterward, DJ Acyde kept the energy high by spinning classic and contemporary dance tunes.
