The learning institution toasted industry greats past and present

Luminaries from the worlds of art, design, entertainment and philanthropy gathered at The Broad in Downtown Los Angeles on the evening of Saturday, Nov. 16, for the ArtCenter Alumni Awards, honoring Doug Aitken, Ini Archibong, Gloria Kondrup and Sterling Ruby.

ArtCenter president Lorne M. Buchman greeted guests, such as Melany Bennett, David Fahey, Tom Gilmore and Merle Ginsburg, to the contemporary art museum, where the affair included a ceremony at Oculus Hall, followed by mingling and a dinner at The Broad-adjacent restaurant Otium, helmed by chef Timothy Hollingsworth.

The pinnacle of the night came when the four honorees took turns expressing their heartfelt thanks to the institution. As Bettina Korek, Philomene Magers, Laura Owens, Matthew Rolston, and other attendees and faculty listened attentively, Ruby expressed his gratitude to the late Mike Kelley and other past mentors. And Aitken recounted how, as a student, he had worked on an AIDS mural alongside the late Keith Haring, who subsequently gave Aitken a supply of enamel paints. Having recently rediscovered these paints among his possessions, the California native gifted them back to ArtCenter.
