Getty and Endeavor kicked off Frieze Week L.A.

On Monday, Feb. 10, Getty and media agency Endeavor invited prominent leaders in the fields of the arts, entertainment and philanthropy — such as Endeavor co-CEO Ari Emanuel and Frieze Los Angeles director Bettina Korek — to gather at the Getty Center for the official launch to Frieze Week L.A.’s triumphant return, and to honor the Art for Justice Fund, an organization working to end mass incarceration in the United States.
Maria Hummer-Tuttle, a trustee of the J. Paul Getty Trust, addressed the crowd, which included MOCA director Klaus Biesenbach, The Broad founding director Joanne Heyler and LACMA vice president Naima J. Keith, and acknowledged Agnes Gund, the founder of Art for Justice Fund, saying, “She alone is the reason that we’re here, because she has taught us what art and philanthropy can do together.”
The evening also featured remarks by James Cuno, president and CEO of J. Paul Getty Trust, followed by a panel led by filmmaker and social activist Catherine Gund, as well as a special appearance by artist, playwright and author Liza Jessie Peterson, who performed a scene from her one-woman play, The Peculiar Patriot.
During the course of the night — which was also attended by artists Marina Abramovic, Alex Israel and Beth DeWoody; fashion designer and philanthropist Rosetta Getty; and museum directors Pilar Tompkins Rivas (Vincent Price Art Museum) and Thelma Golden (The Studio Museum in Harlem) — several exciting announcements were made. Endeavor Foundation executive director Romola Ratnam announced the exhibition Out of Bounds, featuring art by California state prisoners, to be on view during Frieze L.A., and the creation of the Frieze Impact Prize, which will provide access and visibility to artists affected by the criminal justice system. Emanuel also recognized artist Mark Bradford, who created a limited-edition work, entitled Life Size, the sales of which have helped raise $1 million for the Art for Justice Fund.
