Commemorating its third anniversary, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures gathered a bevy of smartly clad stars for its fourth annual gala, presented with Rolex, honoring three creatives who have impacted moviemaking with their artistry and ingenuity on Saturday, October 19. The Renzo Piano–designed museum, at the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax in Los Angeles, rolled out the red carpet for an array of filmmakers, actors, industry executives, and Academy members who raised more than $11 million for exhibitions, education initiatives, and public programming while celebrating Oscar-winning actress, singer, and dancer Rita Morena and director Quentin Tarantino, as well as Oscar-nominated actor Paul Mescal. The evening, headlined by co-chairs Salma Hayek Pinault, Nicole Kidman, Eva Longoria, Tyler Perry, and Dr. Eric Esrailian, included a guest list of notables who have filled screens and stages and green-lit some of the most beloved projects in cinematic history.
Awkwafina, Uma Thurman, Kerry Washington, Peter Sarsgaard and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ted Sarandos and Nicole Avant, Quinta Brunson, Dan Levy, Rashida Jones, Mindy Kaling, Demi Moore, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Annette Bening, Jon M. Chu, Eddie Redmayne, Selena Gomez, Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons, Quinta Brunson, Joan Chen, Amy Adams, Bobby Cannavale, Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley, Nicholas Hoult, Pamela Anderson, Damson Idris, Joey King, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sarah Paulson, Jurnee Smollett, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, Kim Kardashian, Sandra Oh, John David Washington, Elizabeth Olsen, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Laura Harrier, Alfonso Cuarón, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Ayo Edebiri, Jeff Goldblum, and Hans Zimmer were just a few of the notable guests on hand for the evening’s awards and performances who spent the gala catching up with their tablemates. Without the pressure and competition of golden statues going around, the night felt relaxed even as guests arrived attired in gowns and suits that rivaled the Academy’s other party.
Saoirse Ronan handed Mescal, her recent co-star, the evening’s Vantage award honoring an emerging artist, while Steven Spielberg presented the Icon award to the ever-chic Moreno. John Travolta was on hand to honor Tarantino with this year’s Luminary award for expanding the creative possibilities of cinema. Tarantino, in turn, noted he’d donated his first handwritten draft of his Pulp Fiction script to the museum. Under the night sky, Ariana Grande brought out her co-star Cynthia Erivo, who sang selections from The Color Purple and The Wiz, plus The Wizard of Oz’s “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” along with a rousing rendition of Prince’s “Purple Rain.”
