The Los Angeles County Museum of Art gathered artists, filmmakers, collectors, philanthropists, and a cadre of Gucci models for its annual Art + Film Gala, held at the Wilshire Boulevard institution currently under construction on Saturday, November 2. As the new concrete-and-glass Peter Zumthor design loomed beside them, guests summoned by hosts Eva Chow and Leonardo DiCaprio convened to celebrate honorees Simone Leigh, the sculptor, video, performance, and installation artist, and film director Baz Luhrmann, known for his glamorous productions including Elvis, Moulin Rouge, and Romeo + Juliet. The event, presented by Gucci, also included the debut of the house creative director Sabato De Sarno’s second Gucci Notte eveningwear collection of 12 looks for women and four for men modeled by Vittoria Ceretti, Mona Tougaard, George Barnett, and others, including De Sarno himself.
Artists Amy Sherald, Catherine Opie, Lauren Halsey, Lucy Bull, Jonas Wood, Chase Hall, Charles Gaines, and many more were on hand for the evening benefitting LACMA’s film initiatives as well as the museum’s exhibitions, acquisitions and educational programs. Also among those assembled to celebrate Leigh’s larger-than-life sculptures (on view at LACMA and California African American Museum through Jan. 20, 2025) and Luhrmann’s lavish vision (Joan of Arc is the subject of his next epic tale) were Chloe Sevigny, Anna Wintour, François-Henri Pinault, Inez van Lamsweerde, Vinoodh Matadin, Andrew Garfield, Kim Kardashian, Aurora James, Bethann Hardison, Danielle Deadwyler, Blake Lively, John David Washington, Dev Patel, Cara Delevingne, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, Dree Hemingway, Greta Lee, Javier Bardem, Jesse Williams, Kaia Gerber, Laura Dern, Kathy Hilton, Viola Davis, Tina Knowles and Solange Knowles, Mia Goth, Ricky Martin, Michelle Rodriguez, Mikey Madison, Nicholas Hoult, Greta Lee, Sarah Paulson, Sean Baker, Soo Joo Park, Taylor Zakhar Perez, Francesco Carrozzini, Stuart McClave, Yara Shahidi, Law Roach, Wil.I.Am, and Gucci’s deputy CEO, Stefano Cantino. Guests dined on a menu created by chef David Shim of Simon Kim’s COTE, the Korean steak house in New York, before heading outside to dance “like there’s no tomorrow,” following Coleman Domingo’s admonition. In the courtyard, beneath some of fall’s first raindrops, those on hand took in a performance from Gucci-clad Charli XCX, who was also joined by Prada-clad Troye Sivan for their song “Talk Talk.”
