Fashion may be fleeting, but on Wednesday, November 12, Gap debuted its newly redesigned Chestnut Street outpost in San Francisco’s buzzy Marina District with a festive party proving casual American style is eternal — because everything is “Better in Denim.”

First opened in March 1987, the location has been a staple in the neighborhood for nearly 40 years, and its updated look is a nod to the brand’s roots and the original store on Ocean Avenue that began welcoming customers in 1969. With its white walls, warm wood floors and shelving, and curated elements like vinyl record displays, the sleek look pays homage the retailer’s early years while serving as a window into the future: LED screens, AI-powered styling tools, RFID-enabled fitting rooms, and interactive denim displays reflect the city’s creativity and tech-savvy culture. The brick-and-mortar is one of two Gap stores in San Francisco (the other is located at the brand’s South of Market headquarters at 2 Folsom).

Creative director Zac Posen, the company and brand presidents Richard Dickson and Mark Breitbard (respectively), and chief marketing officer Fabiola Torres welcomed guests for shopping, bespoke product activations, and curated bites and drinks from local favorites including Lucca’s, Original Joe’s, Tony’s Pizza, Golden Gate Fortune, and Bar Darlings, while DJ Umami supplied energizing beats.

Also on hand amid the company’s trove of archival campaign images were Mayor Daniel Lurie, Bob and Randi Fisher, Bill and Sako Fisher, Vanessa Getty, Trevor Traina, Sabrina Buell, Supervisor Stephen Sherrill and Sarah Wendell Sherrill, Ken Fulk, Margot Kerr, Kate Harbin Clammer, Sherri McMullen, Lauren Goodman, and Meredith Peck.
