A whimsical take on classic silhouettes drives Thom Browne’s takeover of the Saks Beverly Hills women’s store

Thom Browne’s beloved wire-haired dachshund, Hector, is now rendered in a new type of tweed. The debonair dog — the inspiration behind the look of the designer’s baguette-style bag — would surely embrace the entire Saks x Thom Browne capsule launching in Beverly Hills at the newly reopened Saks Fifth Avenue women’s store. The limited-edition collection, designed to evoke a playful California twist on spring suit silhouettes, incorporates French ribbon tweed, a light new iteration of the woven fabric throughout the collaboration.

Thirteen yarns — including lace, chiffon, and tulle ribbons — are woven by a team of artisans in Southern France’s Jurançon region to create the tweed (first introduced in Browne’s Fall 2018 Runway collection) in the new women’s ready-to-wear designs. Sport coats, pleated skirts, overcoats, cropped jackets, high-waisted shorts, and trousers join slingbacks, loafers, and high-heeled brogues in the collection. Handbags, including structured Micro Attaché cases and Mrs. Thom box bags, round out the offerings.
With this collection, Browne — known for his impeccable tailoring — has devised a polished spring look that’s whimsically hued and graceful yet avant-garde.

Browne’s designs also incorporate elements of his sporty quint-color stripes, and his lush pastel palette evokes the fluted, jiggling desserts — jellies, gelatin, puddings, and flans — that are again becoming centerpieces atop tables from country clubs to experimental downtown eateries. With this collection, Browne — known for his impeccable tailoring, fitted suits, and abbreviated pant legs, and equally admired for his pleated skirts — has devised a polished spring look that’s whimsically hued and graceful yet avant-garde.

The Beverly Hills takeover includes immersive visual installations throughout the women’s store, including a secret garden display with columns evoking 18th-century architecture, a nod to Browne’s Spring 2020 men’s show staged in Paris. The partnership also brings made-to-order animal handbags to Saks for the first time, through April 22. Browne’s menagerie includes rabbit, sheep, elephant, zebra, lion, tiger, and cheetah styles in addition to the Hector-esque carryall, and there are a plethora of fabrics and leathers with which to adorn them.
