Tucked away in the Santa Monica Mountains, the picturesque Calamigos Guest Ranch tempts both locals and travelers alike with 250 acres of grand oak trees, meadows, pools and charming, ranch-style retreats. Arguably Malibu’s best kept secret (and a highly sought-after wedding destination), there’s much to discover at this serene property, as well as its exclusive nearby Beach Club.
Upon arrival, feel instantly transported to this canyon oasis in Malibu wine country—the fresh ocean air reminding you the Pacific is just within reach. After being serenaded by a live pianist in the open-air lobby, you’ll be escorted via meandering paths below a canopy of oaks to one of the property’s 51 cottages, suites and bungalows. Begin your stay by wandering through acres of native plants and wildlife before reaching the trendy Malibu Café restaurant (open to the public). Along the way, you might happen upon the Ferris wheel or the great lawn that boasts plenty of space for games and activities for all ages.
Calamigos is Malibu’s only full-service resort equipped with nearly everything you can imagine. Action seekers can opt for horseback riding, pickleball, guided hikes, and paddle boating on the on-site lake, while those looking for a relaxing respite can book a massage in the vineyards, yoga class or meditative sound bath. Perhaps the only reason to leave the property is a 12-minute drive away—the Calamigos Beach Club. This five-acre beachfront retreat, with free shuttle service, is exclusive to hotel guests and features a restaurant, bar and beach necessities (think chaise lounges, umbrellas and paddleboards).
Since 1937, five generations of one family have continued to expand and morph the ranch while maintaining the surrounding beauty and undisturbed nature. The elegant guest resort rooms recently underwent a renovation with a California cool aesthetic that feels both elevated and familiar.
