Inside the Global Launch of RH Estates

The Corte Madera–based brand condenses four centuries of inspiring design into one undeniably unique concept

Hand carvings, meticulously applied finishes, and time-honored construction define RH’s most significant design concept to date, RH Estates, with collections spanning the entire home ecosystem — from interior and outdoor furnishings to lighting and decor — with more inspiration than could possibly fill the pages of its inaugural 300-page Volume 1 sourcebook.

“The first drop of 165 collections includes a wide array of movement-defining pieces.”

Leaping out of the catalog pages and into RH Design Galleries throughout North America and Europe (including the forthcoming Galleries in West Hollywood and Greenwich, Connecticut) as immersive physical experiences, RH Estates offers its devoted clientele and aesthetes of every stripe rare access to some of the most well-crafted and finest quality furnishings possible. Drawing on the “California Look” — with eclectic mix of antique, heirloom, and contemporary pieces that exemplify a relaxed, yet intentional lifestyle — RH Estates debuted with a preview in April at the opening of RH Milan, and the full assortment of offerings were unveiled internationally on June 16.

The first drop of 165 collections includes a wide array of movement-defining pieces, ranging from Italian Renaissance and 18th-century Portuguese Baroque styling to English Neoclassicism and the more contemporary design style of Michael Taylor, the San Francisco interior designer recognized by Architectural Digest as one of the “20 Greatest Designers of All Time.” In fact, RH’s deep reverence for the pioneer of the California Look that defined the 1970s and ’80s led the international lifestyle brand to acquire Michael Taylor Designs with the intention to preserve and reintroduce many of his most striking creations to new audiences. Pieces like Jennifer — a plush oversize chair first designed in the 1970s for Oscar-winning actor Jennifer Jones — and Diamond Table, with its bold faceted stone pedestal base, have been cast from Taylor’s original molds.

As an homage to the architectural beauty of old-world design, the Netherlands-based, family-owned furnishings development and design firm Van Thiel & Co. has reimagined classical Venetian works, as expressed in the meticulous diamond carvings of Oliviero — a substantial and ornately carved chest — and, in collaboration with San Francisco–based designer Ed Robinson, they’ve conceived Mayfair, a piece that evokes the precise geometry of an 18th-century English neoclassical antique. RH has also partnered with L.A. master design firm Reformations to create pieces like the Valencia sideboard, whose Moorish motifs were inspired by 17th-century Spanish architecture. The classic looks — dreamed up through a wholly contemporary lens — also include fresh takes on opulent 17th-century French design by artisan firm Dennis & Leen.

But wait, there’s more: RH Estates will soon introduce RH Bespoke Furniture — a truly one-of-kind experience where interior designers and clients can specify custom sizes and finishes for many pieces across the collections — as well as RH Couture Upholstery by Dmitriy & Co., which will offer tailor-made seating at a level of refinement akin to the precise pinning, draping, and fitting of a couture gown.
