Oceanfront Digs, Nobu-style
C Insider: Nobu Matsuhisa
After leaving his native Japan to hone his culinary skills in Peru and Argentina, chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa (noburestaurants.com) debuted Matsuhisa restaurant in Beverly Hills in 1987, forever altering Los Angeles’ fine-dining landscape. The sushi master has since built a hospitality empire—with business partner Robert De Niro—spanning 47 restaurants and seven hotels (and counting) across five continents. Still, the L.A.-based mogul’s name is arguably most synonymous with Malibu, where his iconic oceanfront restaurant Nobu—next to the Nobu Ryokan hotel—lures foodies from around the world. Here, Matsuhisa shares his Malibu musts. • Grom for authentic gelato made with ingredients imported from Italy. grom.it. • Malibu Farm Restaurant—a great spot for brunch. malibu-farm.com. • Solstice Canyon is a nice light hike with architectural ruins of past wildfires. 3455 Solstice Canyon Rd., Malibu. • One Gun Ranch practices biodynamic farming.
